حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الزِّنْبَاعِ رَوْحُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: «تُوُفِّيَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ بِالشَّامِ سَنَةَ ثَمَانِ عَشْرَةَ»

Yahya bin Bukayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) died in Syria in the year 18 AH."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمَدِينِيِّ فُسْتُقَةُ، ثنا الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ وَمَنْ لَا أُحْصِي، عَنِ ابْنِ هَرِمَةَ، قَالَ الزُّبَيْرُ: وَحَدَّثَنِي نَوْفَلُ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ، أَنْشَدَنِي أَبُو مَالِكٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَالِكِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ هَرِمَةَ لِعَمِّهِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ هَرِمَةَ: «
[البحر الطويل]
فَمَنْ لَمْ يُرِدْ مَدْحِي فَإِنَّ قَصَائِدِي ... نَوَافِقُ عِنْدَ الْأَكْرَمِينَ سَوَامِي
نَوَافِقُ عِنْدَ الْمُشْتَرِي الْحَمْدَ بِالنَّدَى ... نِفَاقَ بَنَاتِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامِ»

Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Nawfal bin Maymun told me that Abu Malik Muhammad bin Malik bin Ali bin Harmah recited to me this verse of his paternal uncle Ibrahim bin Ali bin Harmah: "Whoever does not want my praise, my odes are nonetheless as prized among the noble as precious freely grazing beasts — they sell well with the buyer who earns praise through generosity, just as the daughters of al-Harith bin Hisham were greatly sought after (in marriage)."

Hadith 3328

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ الْمَدِينِيُّ، ثنا الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ الْكَوْسَجِ مَوْلَى آلِ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ لِرَجُلٍ:
[البحر الكامل]
أَحَسِبْتَ أَنَّ أَبَاكَ يَوْمَ تَسُبُّنِي ... فِي السُّوقِ كَانَ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامِ "

Ibn al-Kawsaj, the freed slave (mawla) of the family of Abu Farwah (may Allah have mercy on him), said to a man: "Did you suppose, on the day you were insulting me in the market, that your father was someone as honoured as al-Harith bin Hisham?"

Hadith 3329

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا شَبَّابٌ الْعُصْفُرِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو وَهْبٍ السَّهْمِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي يُونُسَ الْقُشَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، " أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ، وَعِكْرِمَةَ بْنَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ، وَعَيَّاشَ بْنَ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ أُثْبِتُوا يَوْمَ الْيَرْمُوكِ، فَدَعَا الْحَارِثُ بِشَرَابٍ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ عِكْرِمَةُ فَقَالَ: ادْفَعُوهُ إِلَى عِكْرِمَةَ، فَدُفِعَ إِلَيْهِ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ عَيَّاشُ بْنُ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ، فَقَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ: ادْفَعُوهُ إِلَى عَيَّاشٍ، فَمَا وَصَلَ إِلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ حَتَّى مَاتُوا جَمِيعًا وَمَا ذَاقُوهُ "

Habib bin Abi Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hisham, Sayyiduna Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl and Sayyiduna Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with them) fell wounded on the Day of Yarmuk. Al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) called for water; Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at it, so al-Harith said: Give it to Ikrimah. So it was given to him, and then Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at it, so Ikrimah said: Give it to Ayyash. And it did not reach any one of them before they all died, without having so much as tasted it.

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، ثنا أَبِي، ثنا عَامِرُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: كَيْفَ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْكَ الْوَحْيُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ، فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ مَا قَالَ» . قَالَ: «وَهُوَ أَشَدُّ عَلَيَّ، وَأَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي الْمَلَكُ فَيَتَمَثَّلُ لِي فَيُكَلِّمُنِي مَا يَقُولُ»

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates from Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): How does the revelation come down to you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It comes like the ringing of a bell; then that state leaves me, and I have retained all that was said." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And this is the hardest state on me. And sometimes the angel comes to me, takes on a (human) form, and speaks to me what he says."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأُرْزِيُّ، ثنا عَاصِمُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْيُ؟ قَالَ: يَأْتِينِي صَلْصَلَةً كَصَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ، وَيَأْتِينِي أَحْيَانًا فِي صُورَةِ رَجُلٍ يُكَلِّمُنِي كَلَامًا، وَهُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيَّ، فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ "

Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): How does the revelation come to you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It comes to me like the ringing of a bell; and sometimes he comes in the form of a man and speaks to me, and this is easier on me; then that state leaves me, and I have retained everything."

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْيُ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي فِي مِثْلِ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ، وَهُوُ أَشَدُّ عَلَيَّ، فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ مَا قَالَ، وَأَحْيَانًا يَتَمَثَّلُ لِي الْمَلَكُ رَجُلًا فَيُكَلِّمُنِي فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ» . قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْيَوْمِ الشَّدِيدِ الْبَرْدِ، فَيَفْصِمُ عَنْهُ وَإِنَّ جَبِينَهُ لَيَتَفَصَّدُ عَرْقًا

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): How does the revelation come to you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell, and this is the hardest on me; then that state leaves me, and I have retained all that was said. And sometimes the angel appears before me in the form of a man and speaks to me, and I retain all that he says." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) when the revelation came down upon him on a bitterly cold day, and when the state left him, his forehead (peace and blessings be upon him) would be dripping with sweat.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الطَّحَّانُ، ثنا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: سَأَلَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيهِ الْوَحْيُ، قَالَ: «يَأْتِينِي أَحْيَانًا مِثْلَ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ، فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُهُ، وَهُوَ أَشَدُّ عَلَيَّ، وَيَأْتِينِي أَحْيَانًا الْمَلَكُ فِي صُورَةِ الرَّجُلِ فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ»

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) how the revelation came to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell; then that state leaves me, and I have retained it, and this is the hardest on me. And sometimes the angel comes to me in the form of a man, and I grasp what he says."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Shawwal, and brought her to his home in Shawwal as well."

Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Tell me of something that I may hold fast to. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep control of this," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his tongue.

Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me of something that I may hold fast to. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep control of this," and pointed to his tongue.
