Harithah bin al-Numan al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), a veteran of Badr

Muhammad bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him), naming those who took part in Badr, said: Harithah bin al-Nu'man bin Zayd bin Ubayd bin Tha'labah bin Ghanm bin Malik bin al-Najjar (took part).

Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him), naming those of the Ansar, then of Banu al-Najjar, who took part in Badr, said: Harithah bin al-Nu'man; and he is the one who passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was with Jibril (peace be upon him) at al-Maqa'id.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while Jibril (peace be upon him) was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), speaking privately with him, and he did not greet him with salam. Jibril (peace be upon him) said: What prevented him from greeting? Had he greeted, I would have returned his greeting. Then he said: Listen, he is one of those eighty Companions. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What are the eighty?" Jibril (peace be upon him) said: The people will flee from you except eighty, who will remain with you; their provision and the provision of their children is upon Allah in Paradise. Then when Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) came back, he greeted with salam, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Why did you not greet when you passed by?" He said: I saw a person with you, and I disliked interrupting your conversation. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you see him?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril (peace be upon him), and he said this," and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) told him what Jibril (peace be upon him) had said.

Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while Jibril (peace be upon him) was sitting with him (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Maqa'id, so I greeted him (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam and then went on. When I came back, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had also returned, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Did you see the one who was with me?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril (peace be upon him), and he has returned your greeting."

Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three things will remain attached to my Ummah: taking evil omens, envy and suspicion." A man said: O Messenger of Allah, how can the one in whom they are found remove them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you feel envy, seek forgiveness from Allah; when you have a suspicion, do not turn it into certainty; and when you take an evil omen, go ahead with your task."

Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) had lost his eyesight, so he had tied a thread from his place of prayer to the door of his room, and he kept a basket near him containing dates and other things. Whenever a poor person came and greeted him, he would take something from that basket, then hold the end of the thread (and walk) until he handed it to him himself. His family would say: We will do this on your behalf. He would say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Giving to the poor with one's own hand protects from an evil death."

Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man goes out with his sheep to the edge of the town; from there he keeps attending the prayers and returning to his family, until, when he has eaten up the pasture around him and the land becomes difficult for him, he says: If only I could move to a low-lying plain where the pasture is more lush than this. So he keeps moving on until he attends no prayer except the Friday prayer. Then when the pasture there is also used up and the land becomes difficult, he says: If only I could move to some other place where the pasture is even greener than this. So he keeps moving on until he does not even attend the Friday prayer, and he no longer even knows which day is Friday, until a seal is set upon his heart."

Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man goes out with his sheep and stays at the edge of the town; he keeps attending the prayers and returning to his family, until, when he has eaten up the pasture around him and the land becomes difficult for him, he says: If only I could move to a low-lying plain where the pasture is more lush than this. So he keeps moving until he attends no prayer except the Friday prayer. Then when the pasture there is also used up and the land becomes difficult, he says: If only I could move to some other place where the pasture is even greener than this. So he keeps moving until he does not even attend the Friday prayer, and he no longer even knows what Friday is, until a seal is set upon his heart."

Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A man has a small flock at the edge of the town," and then he narrated it in the same way as mentioned before.

A similar hadith is also narrated from Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Harithah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Giving to the poor with one's own hand protects from an evil death."
