It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath bin Qays al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Kindah and a man from Hadramawt brought a dispute before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) over some land in Yemen. The Hadrami said: O Messenger of Allah! My land was seized by this man's father. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Kindi: "What do you say?" He said: I say that my land is in my possession; I inherited it from my father. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Hadrami: "Do you have any witnesses?" He said: No, but, O Messenger of Allah, let him swear by the One besides whom there is no god worthy of worship that he does not know that it is my land, which his father seized. So the Kindi prepared to take the oath, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wrongfully takes someone's property will meet Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection with his hand cut off (or useless)." So the Kindi returned the land.

Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man from the Hadramis brought a dispute over his land before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) against a man from among us called al-Hafshish. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Hadrami: "Bring your witnesses for your right; otherwise he will swear an oath for you." He said: My land is far too great a matter for him not to swear over it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The oath of a Muslim has behind it something even greater than that." So he (al-Hafshish) set off to take the oath, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he swears falsely, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will enter him into Hellfire." So al-Ash'ath went and told him this, and he said: Make peace between me and him. So peace was made between them.

Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once I bought back my oath for seventy thousand (dirhams), and the reason was that I had heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever takes away the right of a Muslim by a false oath will meet Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, while He is angry with him."

Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This verse was revealed about me. I had some land that was in the possession of a paternal uncle of mine, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring your evidence, or else (the case will be decided by) his oath." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Then he will swear. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever takes a binding (decisive) oath by which he seizes the property of a Muslim man, while he is lying in it, will meet Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, while He is angry with him." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Indeed, those who sell the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price" [Surah Al Imran: 77], to the end of the verse.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever seizes the property of a Muslim man by a false oath will meet Allah while He is angry with him." Just then Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) came in and asked: What has Abu Abd al-Rahman (Abdullah bin Mas'ud) narrated to you? We said: Such and such. He said: It (the verse) was revealed about me. There was a dispute between me and a man over some land of ours, and I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the dispute. I had no witnesses, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I make him take an oath?" I said: O Messenger of Allah! Then he will swear. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever seizes someone's property by a false oath, while he is wicked in it, will meet Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, while He is angry with him." And this verse was revealed: "Indeed, those who sell the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price" [Surah Al Imran: 77], to the end of the verse.
