It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from pursuing the army of the Confederates (al-Ahzab, the enemy bands) and halted in Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) took a bath (ghusl), perfumed himself with incense, and took off his battle dress, armour and so on."
This chain is hasan (good).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the night of the Battle of the Confederates (al-Ahzab) the people scattered from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and only twelve men remained with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while I was sitting huddled up because of the severity of the cold. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn al-Yaman, get up and go to the army of the polytheist Confederates, and see their condition." I said: O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, it was only because of the cold that I could not get up and come to you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the cold of the harrah and of the salty ground, and said: 'Intaliq ya Ibn al-Yaman, fa la ba'sa 'alayka min bardin wa la harrin hatta tarji'a ilayya' (O Ibn al-Yaman, set off; until you return to me you will feel no cold, nor will any heat harm you). Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I set off until I reached their army, and I saw Abu Sufyan sitting in a small band warming himself at a fire, while the other groups had separated from him. I went and sat among them. Abu Sufyan sensed that a stranger had come among them, so he said: "Let every man take hold of the hand of the one sitting beside him." At once I struck my right hand on the hand of the one on my right and seized it, and struck my left hand on the hand of the one on my left and held it. I stayed among them for a little while, then got up from there and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing in prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled with his hand that I should come close. I came close, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) put part of his sheet over me to warm me. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the prayer, he said: "O Ibn al-Yaman, sit down and tell the people the news of the enemy." I said: O Messenger of Allah, the people have scattered from Abu Sufyan and he is left with only a small band who are lighting a fire. Allah Almighty has inflicted on them the same cold as was upon us, but we hope from Allah what they do not hope.
This hadith is hasan (good); its basis is in Sahih Muslim, and it contains some additions. Imam al-Bazzar, having narrated it through Yusuf, said that it is narrated from Bilal from Hudhayfah only through this chain.
In another narration Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: When the night of the Confederates came, the people were overcome by severe hardship and by such intense cold as they had never seen before. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing in prayer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will now get up and bring us news of the enemy? Allah Almighty will make his face radiant on the Day of Resurrection." By Allah, none of them could summon the strength to get up because of the severity of the hardship. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed again and said once more: "Who will now get up and bring us news of the people? Allah Almighty will make him my companion in Paradise." By Allah, still no one got up. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O so-and-so, get up." He said: By the One who revealed the Book to you, I do not have the strength to get up now. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hudhayfah, get up." I too wanted to swear as my companion had sworn, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are all people who swear oaths." So I got up and went to him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and bring us news of the people, but do not do anything new until you return to me." Hudhayfah says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for me that Allah Almighty would protect me from in front of me and from behind me. I set off; between me and them was a dry salt flat, which I crossed at once. When I arrived, I saw that they were in a terrible state. Abu Sufyan was warming himself at a fire because of the cold; it was a small fire that sometimes blazed up and sometimes began to die down, and when it shone I could see those around it. I said to myself: This enemy of Allah is right in front of me. I had just taken an arrow from my quiver and placed it on the bowstring when I remembered the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) words: "Do not do anything new until you return." So I put the arrow back into the quiver. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the situation, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) began praising Allah. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent a violent wind, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned this verse: "O you who believe, remember the favour of Allah upon you" [Surah al-Ahzab: 9].

It is narrated from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi (may Allah have mercy on him) that during the Battle of the Trench (al-Khandaq) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) struck (the ground) with both his blessed hands and then said: "'Bismillahi wa bihi badayna, wa law 'abadna ghayrahu shaqayna, habbadha rabban wa habbadha dinan' (In the name of Allah, and by His help we have begun our work; and had we worshipped any other than Him we would surely have been wretched and ruined; how excellent a Lord He is, and how excellent a religion this is!)"
Imam al-Harith bin Abi Usamah narrated this in his Musnad, and all its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

This narration is mursal, because Imam Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) is a Successor (Tabi'i) and he is narrating directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a trench to be dug around Madinah. Meanwhile a group came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that they had found a hard rock which they were unable to break. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came (to break it), and we too stood up and went with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pickaxe and struck the rock; I had never heard a louder sound from a blow struck by any man. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest); Persia has been conquered." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck a second blow like it and said: "Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest); Rome has been conquered." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) struck another blow like it and said: "Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest); Allah Almighty has brought the tribe of Himyar as helpers and supporters."
Takhrij: This narration is found in Musnad Ahmad (6490) and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir of al-Tabarani (14500). Its chain contains an unnamed (mubham) narrator; however, there are supporting reports (shawahid) of this event in other hadith.

It is narrated from Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him), in mursal form: "On the night of the Battle of the Confederates (al-Ahzab), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and another man out on a moonlit night (to spy on the enemy). The two of them went, observed the situation and then came back. At that time the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was wrapped in a woollen sheet (mirt) belonging to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) took the two of them in with him under that same sheet, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was close against the side of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her)."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: This narration is mursal but its chain is sahih (authentic), and there is (in some respects) reservation or criticism about it.
