It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the surah "Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he" [Surah al-Masad: 1] was revealed, the one-eyed woman Umm Jamil bint Harb came forward screaming and wailing, with a piece of stone in her hand, chanting: "The blameworthy one (Allah forbid) we have rejected, his religion we have shunned, and his command we have disobeyed." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at that time sitting in the Sacred Mosque, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was also sitting with him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Qur'an, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, this woman has arrived and I fear that she will see you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She will never be able to see me." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited those verses of the Qur'an through which the protection of Allah is sought, as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "And when you recite the Qur'an, We place between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a concealed screen" [Surah al-Isra': 45]. So that woman came forward until she stood beside Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), but she could not see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: "O Abu Bakr, I have been told that your companion has satirised me (in verse)?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "No, by the Lord of this House (the Ka'bah), he has not satirised you at all." Hearing this, she turned her back and went away, saying: "Quraysh know well that I am the daughter of their chief."
The narrator says that al-Walid mentioned in his narration, or someone else related, that Umm Jamil, while circumambulating the House, tripped over her wrap and fell, and she said: "May the blameworthy one perish!" At this Umm Hakim, the daughter of Abd al-Muttalib, said (in reply): "I am a dignified and chaste woman to whom no (stranger) can speak, I am highly intelligent and need no one to teach me, and we are both cousins of one another; and after that, Quraysh know best (who has truth and honour)."
Imam Abu Ya'la also narrated this report in the same detailed way through Ishaq bin Ibrahim from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, he from al-Walid bin Kathir, he from Ibn Tadrus, from Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the surah "Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he" [Surah al-Masad: 1] was revealed, the wife of Abu Lahab came towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw her coming, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, she is an extremely foul-mouthed and insolent woman; I fear that she will cause you some hurt, so would it not be better if you left this place?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), reassuring him, said: "She will never be able to see me." Then that woman arrived and said: "O Abu Bakr, your companion has satirised me (in poetry)?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "He does not compose poetry at all." She said: "In my view your word is true and reliable", and she went back. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, did she really not see you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "An angel kept screening me from her sight with his wing the whole time."
Imam al-Bazzar (may Allah have mercy on him) related this report from Ibrahim bin Sa'id al-Jawhari and Ahmad bin Ishaq, they through Abu Ahmad, with the same previous chain.
