It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the surah "Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he" [Surah al-Masad: 1] was revealed, the wife of Abu Lahab came towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw her coming, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, she is an extremely foul-mouthed and insolent woman; I fear that she will cause you some hurt, so would it not be better if you left this place?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), reassuring him, said: "She will never be able to see me." Then that woman arrived and said: "O Abu Bakr, your companion has satirised me (in poetry)?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "He does not compose poetry at all." She said: "In my view your word is true and reliable", and she went back. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, did she really not see you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "An angel kept screening me from her sight with his wing the whole time."
Imam al-Bazzar (may Allah have mercy on him) related this report from Ibrahim bin Sa'id al-Jawhari and Ahmad bin Ishaq, they through Abu Ahmad, with the same previous chain.
