It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that "whenever some severe hardship or distress afflicted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated, he would raise both his blessed hands so high that the whiteness of his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed armpits became visible."
Imam Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili recorded this hadith in his Musnad, but its chain contains a narrator named Nufay' bin al-Harith (Abu Dawud al-A'ma), who is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith) and severely da'if (weak) according to the hadith scholars; therefore this narration is weak in terms of its chain.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while supplicating, raised both his blessed hands so high that the whiteness of both his (peace and blessings be upon him) armpits could be seen clearly."
The chain of this hadith contains Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, a da'if (weak) narrator; however, raising the hands in supplication so high that the whiteness of the armpits is seen is established and authenticated by other sahih hadith.

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Muhayriz (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you ask of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, then ask with the inside of your palms, and do not ask with the backs of your hands."
Khalid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) what it means. He raised both his hands to show it and said: This is how takbir and tahlil (that is, declaring Allah's greatness and oneness) are done.
Clarification: In the Arabic text, "may Allah be pleased with him" is written after the name of Abd al-Rahman bin Muhayriz; however, according to the books of narrator biographies he is a Tabi'i (Successor), so "may Allah have mercy on him" has been used for him in the Urdu translation.
