It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I very much love to preserve your noble sayings (in my heart), but my heart cannot retain them (properly); so may I seek the help of my right hand (to write these sayings down)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish (then do so)."
The chain of this hadith is hasan (good); Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded it in al-Musannaf, and in it he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) explicit permission to write down the blessed hadith.

Ahmad bin Mani' recorded this hadith in his Musnad; its chain contains the narrator Abdullah bin al-Mu'ammal, who is weak in memory; however, other authentic hadith establish the preservation of knowledge through writing, and these support this meaning.

Its chain contains the narrator Juwaybir, who is matruk (abandoned), and al-Dahhak did not hear directly from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Yazid al-Raqashi (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: When we pressed and insisted greatly upon Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) to hear hadith, he would bring bags (of written knowledge) that he had and throw them to us, then he would say: "These are all hadith that I heard directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) myself, then wrote them down, and (by presenting them to him, peace and blessings be upon him) confirmed and verified them."
The narrator in its chain, Yazid bin Aban al-Raqashi, is da'if (weak) according to the majority of hadith scholars; however, other supporting reports are also narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the writing of hadith.
