وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُؤَمَّلِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أُقَيِّدُ الْعِلْمَ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : نَعَمْ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), may I bind knowledge (that is, preserve it by writing it down)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."
Ahmad bin Mani' recorded this hadith in his Musnad; its chain contains the narrator Abdullah bin al-Mu'ammal, who is weak in memory; however, other authentic hadith establish the preservation of knowledge through writing, and these support this meaning.
