Ibn Abi Rafi' narrates from a man who heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) speak when that man asked him (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! What is faith?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Faith is that you believe in Allah Almighty and His Messenger." He asked the same question a second time, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the same answer again. Then when he repeated the question a third time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Would you like me to tell you what the reality of faith and its clearest form is?" He said: "Yes! That is what I wanted." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The clear and manifest form of faith is that when you commit a wrong or wrong someone, whether your slave, your slave-woman or any ordinary Muslim, you give charity and fast (as expiation); and when you do a good deed, you feel joy and happiness at it (seeing it as Allah's enabling)."
Imam al-Harith bin Abi Usamah recorded this hadith in Musnad al-Harith (Bughyat al-Bahith).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The nature of the believer can be moulded upon every kind of habit and trait, or every kind of quality can be ingrained in him, except treachery and lying." (The narrator Ali bin Hashim had some doubt in mentioning these two.)
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith, and Imam al-Bazzar, after narrating the same from Dawud bin Rushayd through Ibrahim bin Ziyad al-Sa'igh, stated explicitly: We know of no narrator other than Ali bin Hashim who narrated this hadith as marfu' (traced back) to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A servant does not reach the true reality and essence of faith until he gives up joking and lying, and until he completely abandons arguing and quarrelling, even if he is in the right."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Islam has eight shares: Islam (that is, affirming the testimony of faith and submission) is a share, prayer is a share, zakah is a share, Hajj to the House is a share, fasting in Ramadan is a share, enjoining good is a share, forbidding evil is a share, and striving (jihad) in the path of Allah Almighty is a share; and the one who has none of these shares has surely failed and lost."
Imam Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi and Imam al-Bazzar recorded this hadith. Imam al-Bazzar narrated it through Muhammad bin Ja'far as mawquf (the saying of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him)), while through Ya'qub bin Ishaq al-Hadrami he also transmitted it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as marfu' (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). Imam al-Bazzar says that no narrator other than Yazid bin Ata narrated it as marfu', while according to Imam al-Daraqutni and other eminent hadith scholars the correct view is that this narration is mawquf.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Islam has eight shares", and then the narrator mentioned the whole hadith.
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Habib erred in the chain of this narration; the correct version is that Imam Abu Ishaq transmitted it through Silah from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) as his own saying, as has already been detailed earlier.
