It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Nawwas bin Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lying is not permissible except in three situations: first, that a person lies in war, for war is stratagem and deception; second, that he resorts to a lie to bring about peace and reconciliation between two people; and third, that a husband tells his wife an (affectionate) untruth to please and gladden her."
Yahya bin Abi Za'idah contradicted Dawud in this narration and reported it from Shahr as mursal; and Dawud also contradicted Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym, who narrated it through Shahr from Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her), and Isma'il bin Ayyash reported it from Ibn Khuthaym in detail.
It is narrated from Shahr bin Hawshab that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched a small detachment on a military expedition. On the way they passed by a Bedouin and said to him: O Bedouin, slaughter a goat for us. He brought a one-year-old young goat from his flock, which they slaughtered, and they cooked and roasted it until midday. Meanwhile, the Bedouin was sitting with his goats in the shade of a shelter. The men of the detachment said to him: O Bedouin, take your goats out of here so that we can take our midday rest (qaylulah) here. He said: I implore you by Allah not to do so, for these goats are pregnant; if I take them out and the hot wind strikes them, they will lose their young. But they replied: Our own lives are dearer to us than your goats. So they forcibly drove the goats out into the sun, and because of the heat they miscarried. Then they set off from there, but when they reached Madinah they found that the Bedouin had already reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) before them and had told him the whole story. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them about it, they denied it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed one man among them and said: "O so-and-so, if there is any good left in your companions, I hope it will be with you, so tell me the truth." He said: O Messenger of Allah, the Bedouin has spoken the truth; the matter is exactly as he described it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are rushing headlong into lying just as moths fall into fire. Remember! Every lie is inevitably recorded (in the record of deeds), except that a person lies in war, for war is a stratagem and tactic, or lies to make peace between two men, or a husband tells his wife an (agreeable) untruth to please her."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched a military detachment towards the outlying region of the tribe of Mudar. They halted in a desert land, and when morning came they saw a tent there, in the courtyard of which sheep and goats were resting. They came to the owner of the flock, stood by him and demanded: "Give us an animal to slaughter." He brought out a goat for them, but they looked down on it and rejected it; then he brought out another goat, and they rejected that one too. The owner said: "Now there is nothing left in my flock except the male ram or a nursing ewe (with young)." But they forcibly took a goat from the flock. Then, when midday came, they had no shade to protect them from the heat, and they were in a barren land where no shade was to be had, while the Bedouin's goats were resting in his shaded shelter. Those men said: "We have more right to the shade than these goats." They came to him and said: "Take your goats out of this shade." He said: "If you take my goats out of here, they will fall ill and miscarry the young in their wombs; and I am a man who has paid zakah and has accepted Islam." But they drove his goats out. Only a short while had passed when they began panting from the heat and miscarried. The Bedouin set off at once for Madinah until he reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of how he had been treated, at which he (peace and blessings be upon him) became intensely angry. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) seated him by his side until the whole group also returned. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, and in their defence they said: "He has lied." At this the anger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) eased somewhat. Then the Bedouin said: "By the One by whom I swear! I hope that Allah Almighty will surely inform you of the reality of my case and theirs." It then settled in the heart of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he was truthful, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) called them one by one in private and, adjuring each of them by Allah, asked him to tell what the Bedouin had told. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and, admonishing them, said: "O people, do not follow one another in lying the way moths fall into fire. Every lie of the son of Adam is recorded against him except in three situations: one is a man who says something to his wife to please her" (and the rest of the hadith).
Maslamah bin Alqamah also narrated it in detail from Dawud, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from al-Nawwas (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Beware! Lying indeed blackens the face, and tale-bearing is a cause of the punishment of the grave."
