بَابُ فَضْلِ الحياء

قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي قَيْسٌ ، قَالَ : كَانَ عُيَيْنَةُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ جَالِسًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَمَعَهُ رَجُلٌ آخَرُ ، وَعِنْدَهُ بَعْضُ نِسَائِهِ ، فَاسْتَسْقَى ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ ، فَأُتِيَ بِشَرَابٍ ، فَلَمَّا أَخَذَ يَشْرَبُ سَتَرُوهُ ، فَقَالَ عُيَيْنَةُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، مَا هَذَا ؟ فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَذِهِ خُلَّةٌ آتَاهَا اللهُ تَعَالَى قَوْمًا ، وَمَنَعَكُمُوهَا ، هَذَا الْحَيَاءُ " .

It is narrated from Qays bin Abi Hazim (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Uyaynah bin al-Mundhir (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting in the blessed gathering of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); another man was with him, and some of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were also present there. That man asked for water to drink, and something to drink was brought to him. When he began to drink, he was screened (for the sake of modesty) from people's sight. At this Uyaynah said (in surprise): "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is this?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is a moral quality which Allah Almighty has granted to some people and has withheld from you, and it is modesty (haya')."

وَقَالَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ : حَدَّثَنَا طَلْحَةُ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَهَا : " يَا عَائِشَةُ ، إِنَّ الْفُحْشَ لَوْ كَانَ رَجُلًا لَكَانَ رَجُلَ سَوْءٍ " .

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "O Aishah, if obscenity and indecency were in human form, it would certainly be an evil man."

It is narrated from Yazid bin Talhah bin Rukanah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, every religion has a particular character and essential trait, and the distinguishing character and special trait of Islam is modesty (haya')."

حَدَّثَنَا قَزَعَةُ بْنُ سُوَيْدٍ ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ قَالَ : مَرَرْتُ عَلَى أَعْرَابِيٍّ ، فَقَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " أَوَّلُ مَا يُرْفَعُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ الْحَيَاءُ وَالْإِيمَانُ ، فَسَلُوهُمَا اللهَ تَعَالَى " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The first things to be taken away from this Ummah will be modesty and faith, so ask Allah Almighty for both of them."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this hadith in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Qaza'ah bin Suwayd, a weak narrator, although its meaning is correct on the basis of other supporting reports.

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي سَمِينَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ هُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَوْدِيُّ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُقَالُ لَهُ : أُسَيْرٌ ، فَقَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الْحَيَاءُ لَا يَأْتِي إِلَّا بِخَيْرٍ " .
Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman narrates: I and a companion of mine went to one of the eminent Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whose name was Usayr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Modesty, bashfulness and dignity bring nothing but goodness and benefit."
