It is narrated from Yahya bin Abdullah bin Sayfi that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever receives a blessing from Allah Almighty through me, it is binding upon him to repay it; then if he does not have the means to repay it, let him express abundant praise and commendation (of the benefactor); and if he does not do even that, he has certainly been ungrateful (for the blessing)."
This report is mursal; Imam Ahmad narrated it in al-Musnad, and its basis is established on the strength of other supporting reports.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is given a gift or present and has the means to repay it should repay it; but if he does not have the means to repay it, he should praise (his benefactor), for whoever praises him has indeed thanked him, and whoever conceals the favour has been ungrateful for it. And whoever displays importance or adorns himself with something he was not given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood." And (the narrator) Bishr moved his index finger and middle finger.
Imam al-Harith recorded this narration through Abd al-Aziz bin Aban, Ibrahim bin Tahman, Umarah bin Ghaziyyah and Sa'id, the mawla of the Ansar, from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), with similar meaning.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two qualities which, if found in a person, Allah Almighty records him as grateful and patient: one who looks at someone above him in matters of religion and follows his example, and one who looks at someone below him in worldly wealth and possessions and praises Allah Almighty for the blessings by which He has favoured him over others. And there are two qualities which, if found in a person, Allah Almighty will record him neither as patient nor as grateful: one who looks at someone above him in matters of religion but does not follow his example, and one who looks at someone higher than him in worldly comforts and keeps grieving and lamenting (over what he lacks)."
This hadith is also found in Sunan al-Tirmidhi (2512), and Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it hasan (good); although its chain contains Rishdin bin Sa'd, a weak narrator, its meaning is sound and established on the basis of other supporting reports.
