It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two qualities which, if found in a person, Allah Almighty records him as grateful and patient: one who looks at someone above him in matters of religion and follows his example, and one who looks at someone below him in worldly wealth and possessions and praises Allah Almighty for the blessings by which He has favoured him over others. And there are two qualities which, if found in a person, Allah Almighty will record him neither as patient nor as grateful: one who looks at someone above him in matters of religion but does not follow his example, and one who looks at someone higher than him in worldly comforts and keeps grieving and lamenting (over what he lacks)."
This hadith is also found in Sunan al-Tirmidhi (2512), and Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it hasan (good); although its chain contains Rishdin bin Sa'd, a weak narrator, its meaning is sound and established on the basis of other supporting reports.
