It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is given a gift or present and has the means to repay it should repay it; but if he does not have the means to repay it, he should praise (his benefactor), for whoever praises him has indeed thanked him, and whoever conceals the favour has been ungrateful for it. And whoever displays importance or adorns himself with something he was not given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood." And (the narrator) Bishr moved his index finger and middle finger.
Imam al-Harith recorded this narration through Abd al-Aziz bin Aban, Ibrahim bin Tahman, Umarah bin Ghaziyyah and Sa'id, the mawla of the Ansar, from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), with similar meaning.
