Etiquette of drinking

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) halted at a place, and a woman sent a goat to him (peace and blessings be upon him) with her son. He (peace and blessings be upon him) milked it and then said to the boy: "Take it to your mother." So the woman drank that milk until she was satisfied. Then the boy came with another goat; he (peace and blessings be upon him) milked it and gave Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) to drink. Then the boy brought another goat; he (peace and blessings be upon him) milked it and then drank himself.
Abu Ya'la recorded it in his Musnad. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, who has been criticised by the hadith scholars on account of his memory; however, incidents of this kind during the journey of the Hijrah are established through other reliable chains as well.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Provide (your livelihood and food) by means of goats, for it is a drink (siqya) given by Allah Almighty; and when you milk them, do not exhaust them, and leave (some milk in the udder) that calls forth (more) milk (that is, draws it down)."
The chain of this hadith contains the narrator Khasib bin Jahdar, whom the imams of criticism and accreditation (al-jarh wa al-ta'dil) have declared a liar and matruk (abandoned); therefore this report falls into the category of severely weak or mawdu' (fabricated), as al-Albani and other researchers have mentioned it in the Silsilah of weak hadith.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mukhawwal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! The camels (of travellers) pass by us while we are suffering severe drought and hunger, and the udders of those camels are full of milk (so may we milk them?)" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Milk and drink, but leave in the udders some amount that draws down the milk."
The chain of this hadith contains the narrator Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Masmul, who is weak, and al-Bayhaqi also recorded it in his Sunan.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be extremely careful to avoid drinking from a vessel that, through frequent use, had absorbed the effects of wine (that is, had become saturated with wine)."
Ibn Abi Umar recorded this hadith; however, the narrator in its chain, Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Khuzi, is weak.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade drinking from a vessel whose mouth has been bent back.

Simak bin Harb said: My uncle sent me to the Ansar to demand (repayment of a debt) from one of their men. One of them brought something to drink in a vessel, and one of the men present blew into it. At this another man said (forbidding him): "Do not do that, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to forbid that (blowing into the vessel in this way)."
This hadith is sahih.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: One day I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drinking something, and he drank it in three breaths. So I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Did you drink the water in three breaths?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes; this way is more healing, more wholesome (quenching the thirst well) and more protective against illness."
Takhrij: Abd bin Humayd recorded it in his Musnad (no. 2433); its chain contains the narrator Ibrahim bin al-Hakam bin Aban, who is weak.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a man from drinking (water) directly from the mouth of a waterskin (by putting his mouth to it)."
Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah also narrated something similar through Abu Mu'awiyah, al-A'mash and al-Hasan al-Basri, from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) (who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) strictly forbade blowing into a drink, that is, anything that is drunk. He also related that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man blowing into a drink and then drinking it while standing, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) warned him, saying: "If you are able to vomit it out (of your body), then do so."
Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad; however, Yusuf bin Khalid al-Basri in its chain has been declared severely weak and matruk (abandoned) by the imams of criticism and accreditation.
