It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade branding (animals) on the face." (This branding, called wasm, was usually done with hot iron to identify animals or show their ownership.) At this, Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will not brand (an animal) except on its last bone (of the body)," (that is, on a part where neither the face is disfigured nor the pain is great) so he branded (his animals) on the ja'iratayn. (Ja'iratayn refers to that part of an animal's haunches that is near the root of the tail; it is a part of the body where branding causes the animal less pain and its outward features are not affected.)
And Abu Ya'la said: Musa bin Muhammad bin Hayyan narrated to us; Sulayman bin Dawud narrated it to him with the same (chain and text).

(This is the wording of Ibn Mushir), and (the same narrator) added: "And he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade striking the face or branding the face."

Abu Ya'la (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a camel that had been branded on its face was brought past the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If only the owners of this camel had kept the fire (of branding its face) away from this animal." (Talhah bin Ubaydullah, may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said (to myself): I will certainly brand (my animals in future) at the place farthest from the face. So I branded (my animal) at the root of the tail.
