It is narrated from Abu Sa'id, the freed slave (mawla) of Abu Usayd (who is Malik bin Rabi'ah), that the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), forbade performing Umrah in the months of Hajj (ashhur al-hajj), or Hajj al-Tamattu'. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) immediately raised his voice in the talbiyah for Umrah right there. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came down from the pulpit, took hold of something and went with it towards Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (So Sayyiduna Talhah and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood up and snatched that thing from his hand; then he went towards Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).) It reached the point that he was about to jab his finger into his eye, and he began saying to him: "Innaka la-dallun mudill (Indeed, you have strayed from the path of truth yourself and are leading others astray)," while Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) made no reply to his words.
All the narrators in the chain of this report (athar) are thiqat (trustworthy), and it is one instance of the difference of opinion found among the eminent Companions in scholarly and juristic (ijtihadi) matters.

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "I saw Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) when some provocation from Satan had arisen between them, and neither of them left anything unsaid (in harsh words) to the other. If I wished to relate to you in detail what passed between them, I would do so. Then neither of them left his place until each of them had sought forgiveness (istighfar), that is, prayed to Allah for forgiveness, for his companion."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Jarmi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was sitting with the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), when suddenly an elderly man came. When the people saw him, they said: This is Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he said: "Marhaban wa ahlan bi-akhi (Welcome, and a warm welcome to my brother)." [Then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) also said: "Marhaban wa ahlan bi-akhi (Welcome, and a warm welcome to my brother)."] (Then he said:) By my life, you were very severe in issuing the order (restricting me); but by Allah, had you ordered me to come crawling on my knees, I would certainly have come crawling on my knees for as long as I had the strength.
Hadith number: 2138. In its chain Talhah bin Amr is a matruk (abandoned) narrator; however, this report reflects a Companion's obedience to the ruler and mutual respect.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, what do you say about a man who is extremely eager for jihad in the path of Allah and is fully equipped (with weapons and mount), but his commanders (the leaders of the army) order him to do countless things that he cannot keep count of?" He said: "By Allah, I do not know what to say to you, except that when we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), whatever we were ordered to do, we carried it out (without hesitation)."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated it in his book al-Musnad.
