Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2136 — Patience with the ruler's discipline

It is narrated from Abu Sa'id, the freed slave (mawla) of Abu Usayd (who is Malik bin Rabi'ah), that the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), forbade performing Umrah in the months of Hajj (ashhur al-hajj), or Hajj al-Tamattu'. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) immediately raised his voice in the talbiyah for Umrah right there. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came down from the pulpit, took hold of something and went with it towards Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (So Sayyiduna Talhah and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood up and snatched that thing from his hand; then he went towards Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).) It reached the point that he was about to jab his finger into his eye, and he began saying to him: "Innaka la-dallun mudill (Indeed, you have strayed from the path of truth yourself and are leading others astray)," while Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) made no reply to his words.
All the narrators in the chain of this report (athar) are thiqat (trustworthy), and it is one instance of the difference of opinion found among the eminent Companions in scholarly and juristic (ijtihadi) matters.
