It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "I saw Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) when some provocation from Satan had arisen between them, and neither of them left anything unsaid (in harsh words) to the other. If I wished to relate to you in detail what passed between them, I would do so. Then neither of them left his place until each of them had sought forgiveness (istighfar), that is, prayed to Allah for forgiveness, for his companion."
