The validity of a triple divorce in one utterance if it was intended

Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: We were present in the gathering of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man came and said: A man said to his wife that she has eight divorces? Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Did you say these words all at once? He said: Yes. He asked: Do you want your wife to be separated from you? He replied: Yes. So he said: Then the matter is just as you said. Then another man came and said: A man said to his wife that tonight she has divorces equal to the number of the stars? He asked: Did you say it all at once? He replied: Yes. He asked: Do you want your wife to be separated from you? He said: Yes. At that point Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said something mentioning the women of the people of the earth, which I did not remember. Then he said: Allah Almighty has made clear to you what the method of divorce is. So whoever divorces in the way that Allah Almighty has commanded, the legal ruling has been made clear for him; and whoever himself muddles and confuses the matter, we will turn his confusion back upon him. By Allah, it cannot be that you confuse your own affairs and we bear the burden of it; its ruling is just what you yourselves say with your own tongues.
This chain is mawquf (stopping at the Companion), and it is sahih (authentic) provided that Muhammad bin Sirin heard it from Alqamah; and in the narration of Imam al-Bayhaqi his explicit statement of having been told this hadith has come.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "The woman with whom consummation has not yet taken place: when all three divorces are combined upon her at once, they take effect." Hasan bin Muslim says: Then I mentioned this to Imam Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: I bear witness that I myself heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that he counted it as only one divorce. Amr also said the same: it is one divorce, even if all three are combined (in words).
In this narration two different opinions are reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the ruling on three divorces given at once to a woman whose marriage has not been consummated: according to the first opinion all three take effect, whereas according to the testimony of Imam Tawus his other position was that it is counted as only one divorce.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "The woman with whom intercourse (consummation) has not yet taken place and the one with whom intercourse has taken place are both equal in the ruling on three (divorces taking effect)."

It is narrated from Dawud bin Ibrahim bin Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah have mercy on him): One of my forefathers gave his wife a thousand divorces. Then his sons came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your father did not fear Allah, so that He would make a way out for him, as the divine word says: 'And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out' (Surah al-Talaq: 2). That woman has been separated from him by three divorces alone, and all the remaining divorces are sheer transgression and wrongdoing; this man has made a mockery of the verses of Allah, whereas Allah Almighty says: 'And do not take the verses of Allah in jest' (Surah al-Baqarah: 231)."
