It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jesting and playing are not permissible in the Shari'ah in three matters: divorce, marriage and freeing a slave. So whoever utters these words (whether seriously or merely in jest), they become binding and effective upon him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a man would divorce his wife and then say: I was only joking; or he would free his slave and say: I said it only in play; or he would marry off his daughter and say: I was only amusing myself. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three things which, if a person utters them even merely as a joke, become legally effective upon him: divorce, freeing a slave and marriage."
In view of this very situation, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this command: "And do not take the verses of Allah in jest" (Surah al-Baqarah: 231), that is, "and do not make the commands of Allah a target of jest and mockery."
