It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us; then the narrator mentioned a long hadith in which there is also this saying: "Whoever makes things difficult for his Muslim brother, Allah Almighty will take away his provision from him, ruin his livelihood and leave him to himself; and whoever harms a Muslim is not one of us, and I am free of him in this world and the Hereafter; and whoever, despite being able, puts off his creditor, upon him is a burden like the sin of a tithe-collector ('ashshar)." Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is the sin of the tithe-collector? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sin of the tithe-collector is that every day the curse of Allah Almighty, the angels and all the people is upon him; and whomever Allah removes far from His mercy, you will never find for him any helper." Clarification: This hadith is mawdu' (fabricated).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Whoever takes a loan from people while Allah Almighty knows well that he firmly intends to repay it, and then death comes to him before the time of repayment arrives, Allah Almighty will satisfy him (the creditor) in exchange for his right (from His own side) and will pardon him (the debtor). And whoever takes a loan from people while Allah Almighty knows well that he does not intend to repay it, Allah Almighty will exact retribution (qisas) from him, and will say (to the creditor): 'Did you think that I would not take retribution for you from him?'"
