It is narrated from Abu Hariz that Ibrahim related this incident to him: Al-Aswad bin Yazid used to borrow from a mawla (freed slave) of the tribe of Nakha', who was a merchant, and when his state stipend came out he would repay him. Once, when his stipend came out, al-Aswad said to that merchant: If you wish, delay the repayment from us a little, for we have some other obligations due in this stipend? The merchant replied: I am not going to do that. So al-Aswad paid him five hundred dirhams in cash, and when the merchant had received the sum, he said to him: Here, take it back. Al-Aswad said: I asked you for this very concession and you refused? The merchant answered him: In fact, I heard you yourself relating to us this hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "Whoever lends to someone twice will have a reward equal to giving one of the two in charity." Imam Ibn Hibban declared this narration sahih (authentic), and he recorded it from Imam Abu Ya'la with this same chain; also, Imam Ahmad and Imam Ibn Majah recorded something similar through the route of Alqamah from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), in which a story of Alqamah is also mentioned, and its context is different, which shows that these are, as it were, two separate incidents.
