It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that when we reached the valley of Muhassir, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pick up the pebbles for stoning the Jamarat (rami al-jimar) from the valley of Muhassir itself."

Sayyiduna Salman bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We watched the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), on the Day of the First Departure (al-nafr al-awwal, the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah). He came out to us with drops of ablution water dripping from his blessed beard; there were pebbles in his hand, and he had kept some pebbles in the fold of his lower garment (his waistband). He was walking, and all along the way he kept raising the takbir, 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), until he reached the first Jamrah. There he stoned it and kept on throwing until he had finished his pebbles; out of the fear that a pebble thrown by someone else might hit him, he stood, as a precaution, away from the place where the other people were throwing. Then he supplicated for a long time, after which he went on to the middle Jamrah and then to the last Jamrah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said (concerning the pebbles of the Jamarat): "Those of these pebbles of the Jamarat that are accepted (in the Divine Presence) are lifted up, and those that are rejected are left there; and were it not for this (unseen act of lifting), the heap of pebbles there would have become far higher than a hand-span."

Abdullah bin Amr says: Then this was mentioned to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said (in support of it): "He has spoken the truth."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh, or Ibn Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught the people the rites of Hajj. He says that on that occasion Allah Almighty granted our hearing such range and strength that we were hearing his (peace and blessings be upon him) sermon even though we were in our camps and with our saddles. And among the teachings he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us was this: "When you stone the Jamarat, use for it pebbles like the small pebbles that are flicked between the fingers (hasa al-khadhf)."
Imam Abu Dawud has also recorded part of this hadith through the narration of Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'adh al-Taymi from one of the Companions of the Messenger (may Allah be pleased with him).
