Sayyiduna Salman bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We watched the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), on the Day of the First Departure (al-nafr al-awwal, the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah). He came out to us with drops of ablution water dripping from his blessed beard; there were pebbles in his hand, and he had kept some pebbles in the fold of his lower garment (his waistband). He was walking, and all along the way he kept raising the takbir, 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), until he reached the first Jamrah. There he stoned it and kept on throwing until he had finished his pebbles; out of the fear that a pebble thrown by someone else might hit him, he stood, as a precaution, away from the place where the other people were throwing. Then he supplicated for a long time, after which he went on to the middle Jamrah and then to the last Jamrah.
