It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked about Hajj al-Tamattu' (performing Umrah in the months of Hajj and leaving ihram, then entering ihram for Hajj), and he replied: "This (concession) was specific to us; it is not for you people."

Imam Abu Ya'la (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated with his chain that Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I made the journey of Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (At one stage) he (peace and blessings be upon him) found Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) taking off her (ihram) clothes, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter with you?" She submitted: "I have been informed that you have permitted your family to leave ihram." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, (this concession) is for the one who does not have a sacrificial camel with him; but as for us, we have not yet left ihram, because we have sacrificial animals with us, until we reach Arafat."

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived with some of his companions, who had combined Hajj and Umrah (in their ihram). When Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) was informed that Imran had come with his companions having entered a combined ihram for Hajj and Umrah, he sent him a message: "Choose one of the two." At this Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Commander of the Believers has forbidden us (from performing qiran in this way), and he has also given us a choice; so I choose Hajj."
From a scholarly and juristic standpoint, the intent of Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) was that visitors should make the journeys of Hajj and Umrah separately, so that the House of Allah would remain lively and frequented throughout all the months of the year; and Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him), out of respect for the order of the Commander of the Believers and for the sake of the order of the community, adopted the form proposed by the caliph instead of his own preference.

Sa'd, the freed slave of Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), states: We set out in the company of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), until when we reached the miqat of Dhu al-Hulayfah, he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I intend to perform both Hajj and Umrah together (Hajj al-Qiran); so whoever among you wishes to do this should say what I say." Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) called out the talbiyah and said: 'Bi-'umratin wa hajjatin ma'an' (I intend both Umrah and Hajj together).

It is narrated from the nephew of Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood upon the hill of Marwah, and in his blessed hand there was a broad arrowhead (or a scissor-like implement) with which he was trimming his blessed hair short, and at the same time he was saying: "Umrah has entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection."
