Humayd bin Hilal (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, he offered his funeral prayer.
Its chain is sahih (authentic), but this narration is mursal.
Imam al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated it with a connected chain: Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer at the grave of Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) and said four takbirs.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a new grave and asked: "Whose grave is this?" The Companions said: This is the grave of such-and-such a woman. At that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not inform me (of her funeral)?" They said: (O Messenger of Allah,) you were resting at that time, so we did not like to wake you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do that again; call me for your funerals." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) formed a row over that grave (for the funeral prayer).
The chain of this hadith is hasan (good), and Imam Ibn Majah recorded it in abridged form.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit the poor of the people of Madinah when they were ill, and when one of them died he would attend his funeral. A woman from al-Awali died. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: "When her final moment comes, inform me." So the people came to inform him (peace and blessings be upon him), but found him (peace and blessings be upon him) asleep, and much of the night had passed. They did not think it right to wake him (peace and blessings be upon him), and they feared for him (peace and blessings be upon him) the darkness of the night and the harmful creatures of the earth, so they buried the woman. In the morning, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked about her. The people told him the whole incident, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to her grave, offered her funeral prayer and said four takbirs.
In the narration of Imam al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him), it states that the illness of this woman of al-Awali had become prolonged. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to ask those of her neighbours who came to him about her condition, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered them to inform him (peace and blessings be upon him) if she died. When she died, the people carried her bier to the place of funeral prayers, but they did not think it right to wake him (peace and blessings be upon him) from his sleep. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you do that? Get up." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, formed a row as for a funeral prayer, the Companions lined up behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said four takbirs over this woman.
In this narration, Bishr bin Bakr corroborated Muhammad bin Mus'ab by narrating it from Imam al-Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on him), and Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) also recorded it.
Clarification: This narration shows the compassion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) toward the Companions, especially the poor, and the permissibility of offering the funeral prayer at the grave after burial.
