[قَالَ] إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، أَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَدْخُلُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمًا وَقَدْ كَشَفَ عَنْ فَخِذَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : " يَا ابْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، لَا تَكْشِفْ عَنْ فَخِذِكَ فَإِنَّهَا عَوْرَةٌ ، وَلَا تَنْظُرْ إِلَى فَخِذِ حَيٍّ وَلَا مَيِّتٍ ، فَإِنَّكَ تُغَسِّلُ الْمَوْتَى " .
قُلْتُ : أَخْرَجَهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ ، وَابْنُ مَاجَهْ مِنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ حَبِيبٍ ، بِسَنَدِهِ دُونَ قَوْلِهِ : " فَإِنَّهَا عَوْرَةٌ " وَدُونَ قَوْلِهِ : " فَإِنَّكَ تُغَسِّلُ الْمَوْتَى " .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to visit the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One day he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) while he had uncovered his thighs, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O son of Abu Talib! Do not uncover your thigh, for it is 'awrah (a private part), and do not look at the thigh of anyone living or dead, for you are the one who washes the dead."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah narrated it through Ibn Jurayj, with the chain of Habib, but in their versions his (peace and blessings be upon him) words "for it is 'awrah" and "for you wash the dead" are not included.
Al-Haytham bin Kulayb al-Shashi also narrated it, through Muhammad bin Sa'd al-Awfi, Rawh bin Ubadah, Ibn Jurayj, Habib bin Abi Thabit and Asim bin Damrah, from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while I had my thigh uncovered, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali! Cover your thigh, for it is part of the 'awrah (the parts to be covered)."

It is narrated from Amrah (may Allah have mercy on her) that the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), said: "A woman who has the means and ability (to wear three garments) must never perform prayer in fewer than three garments."
Imam Musaddad bin Musarhad narrated it in his Musnad. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Ishaq, who did not state explicitly that he heard it; however, on the basis of other supporting reports its meaning has been accepted, and from a fiqh perspective it indicates the importance of complete covering and precautionary measures for women in prayer.

حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ مَسْرُوقٌ : كَيْفَ تُصَلِّي [الْأَمَةُ ؟] قَالَ : ( كَمَا تَخْرُجُ ) .
It is narrated from Imam Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) that he was asked how a slave-woman should perform prayer. He said: "She should pray in the same form and dress in which she goes out (when leaving the house)."
Takhrij: This report is narrated in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (hadith: 6265); however, the narrator in its chain, Mujalid bin Sa'id, is weak (da'if) according to the majority of hadith scholars.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A woman should perform prayer in three garments (of clothing)."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that she said: "I saw my father (Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)) performing prayer in a single garment while his other clothes were laid aside, and he said to me: O my dear daughter! Indeed, the last prayer that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed, he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed dressed in a single garment."
Imam Abu Ya'la also transmitted it (in his Musnad) through Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah with the same chain.

[وَقَالَ] الْحَارِثُ : نَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ ، نَا اللَّيْثُ ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ الْخَوْلَانِيِّ رَبِيبِ مَيْمُونَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : ( رَأَيْتُ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تُصَلِّي فِي دِرْعٍ سَابِغٍ ضَيِّقٍ ، وَخِمَارٍ ، لَيْسَ عَلَيْهَا إِزَارٌ ) .

It is narrated from Ubaydullah al-Khawlani (may Allah have mercy on him), who was raised in the care of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), that he said: "I saw the pure wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), praying in a long shift covering the whole body, which was narrow (in width), and a head-covering, while she was not wearing a separate waist-wrapper beneath it."

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ أَرْطَاةَ قَالَ : ( سَأَلْتُ عَطَاءً عَنِ الْقَوْمِ يَغْرَقُونَ فَيَخْرُجُونَ عُرَاةً كَيْفَ يُصَلُّونَ ؟ قَالَ : إِنْ أَصَابُوا حَشِيشًا اسْتَتَرُوا بِهِ ، وَإِلَّا صَلَّوْا قُعُودًا ، إِمَامُهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ - أَوْ قَالَ : وَسْطَهُمْ - ) .
It is narrated from Hajjaj bin Artah that he asked (the renowned Successor) Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) about people who are drowning (because a boat or the like has sunk) and then come out (of the water) naked: how should they perform prayer? He said: "If they find grass or vegetation (to cover themselves), they should cover themselves with it; and if nothing at all is available, they should pray sitting, with their imam right among them, or he said: in their middle, (in a single row)."
Imam Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili transmitted this narration in his Musnad. In its chain, Hajjaj bin Artah, despite being saduq (truthful), is well known for tadlis (concealing the source); however, this report is based on the fiqh position of Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning the manner of prayer in a state of necessity.

وَقَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَدِيُّ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : ( كَانَ عَامَّةُ مَنْ يُصَلِّي خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَصْحَابَ الْعُقَدِ ) . قُلْتُ : وَمَا أَصْحَابُ الْعُقَدِ ؟ قَالَ : ( لَمْ يَكُنْ لِأَحَدِهِمْ إِلَّا ثَوْبٌ كَانَ يَعْقِدُهُ عَلَى عُنُقِهِ ) .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Most of those who prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were Ashab al-Uqad (the people of the knots)." I asked: What is meant by Ashab al-Uqad? He replied: "None of them had more than one garment, which (because of the scarcity of clothing) he would tie with a knot at his neck."
Imam Abu Dawud narrated it. In its chain, the narrator Adi bin al-Fadl al-Basri is weak (da'if); however, its basic meaning is established by the narration of Sahih al-Bukhari (hadith: 361), which mentions praying with a sheet tied at the neck when clothing is scarce.
