[ قَالَ] الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ - هُوَ ابْنُ سَالِمٍ - عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَسِيرٍ - أَوْ سَرِيَّةٍ - فَأَصَابَنَا غَيْمٌ ، فَتَحَرَّيْنَا ، فَاخْتَلَفْنَا فِي الْقِبْلَةِ ، فَصَلَّى كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنَّا يَخُطُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ لِنَعْلَمَ أَمْكِنَتَنَا ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْنَا نَظَرْنَا فَإِذَا نَحْنُ قَدْ صَلَّيْنَا لِغَيْرِ الْقِبْلَةِ ، فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ يَأْمُرْنَا بِالْإِعَادَةِ ، وَقَالَ : " قَدْ أَجْزَأَتْ صَلَاتُكُمْ " .
317 \ 2 - تَابَعَهُ : مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ الْعَرْزَمِيُّ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ .
317 \ 3 - وَرُوِيَ أَيْضًا عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ .
317 \ 2 - تَابَعَهُ : مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ الْعَرْزَمِيُّ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ .
317 \ 3 - وَرُوِيَ أَيْضًا عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, or on a sariyyah (military expedition), when clouds covered us. We tried to determine the direction of the qiblah, but we differed among ourselves about the qiblah. Then each one of us prayed (according to his own judgement) and drew a line in front of himself so that we would know our places and directions. When morning came and we looked, we found that we had prayed facing a direction other than the qiblah. We mentioned this situation to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not order us to repeat the prayer; rather, he said: "That prayer of yours has sufficed."
Imam al-Harith says that Dawud bin Amr narrated this hadith to us, from Muhammad bin Yazid al-Wasiti, from Muhammad (bin Salim), from Ata, from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both). Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Arzami also corroborated this narration from Ata, and Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sulayman also transmitted this narration through Ata.
