It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "What an excellent place the hammam (public bathhouse) is! It removes dirt from the body and (by its heat) reminds one of the Fire (of Hell)."
This narration is sahih (authentic) as mawquf (a Companion's statement).
Also from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What an excellent place is the hammam which a Muslim man enters, because when he enters it (and feels the heat), he asks Allah Almighty for Paradise and seeks refuge with Him from the Fire. And what an evil place is the wedding feast (in which there is frivolity and amusement) which a Muslim man enters, because when he joins it, it makes him desire this world and makes him heedless of the Hereafter."

Imam Ibn Abi Umar narrated this hadith in his Musnad; Imam al-Tirmidhi (2801) and Imam al-Nasa'i (401) also recorded narrations with this meaning, and on the basis of supporting reports this hadith is sahih (authentic).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he entered the hammam (public bathhouse), the manager or owner of the hammam would apply 'nurah' (a lime paste for removing hair) to him, and when, while applying the paste, he reached his 'haqw' (the place around the waist where the waist-wrap is tied, or the area to be covered), he would say to the owner of the hammam: "Now go out from here."
Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated this report in his book 'al-Musannaf'; the narrator Atiyyah al-Awfi in its chain is da'if (weak) according to the majority of hadith scholars, but it is established by other authentic proofs that guarding modesty and covering the private parts is obligatory even in the bathhouse.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has firm faith in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should honour and respect his neighbour; whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should honour his guest; whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should speak good with his tongue or else remain silent; and whoever among your women believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day must never enter the (public) hammam."
The narrator relates: I conveyed this hadith to Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) during his caliphate, so he sent a letter to Abu Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm asking him to enquire of Muhammad bin Thabit about this hadith he narrated, for he is an approved and trustworthy narrator. So he asked him and then wrote a reply to Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him), after which he prohibited women from going to the hammam. Imam Ibn Hibban and Imam al-Hakim declared this hadith sahih (authentic).
