Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Make a barrier of the lawful between yourselves and the unlawful." After that the narrator mentioned the full hadith.
Al-Tabarani recorded it within a long hadith. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except al-Tabarani's teacher al-Miqdam bin Dawud, who has been declared trustworthy despite the weakness in him.

Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, the lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between the two are some doubtful matters. Whoever guards himself against them, they will be a protection for his religion; and whoever falls into them may soon fall into the major sins too, like one who grazes around a protected pasture who may well enter the pasture itself. And every king has his own protected pasture."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Ubaydah, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are some doubtful matters. Whoever falls into them is likely to become a sinner, and whoever avoids them does better for his religion, like one who grazes beside a protected pasture who may well enter the pasture. Every king has his own protected pasture, and the protected pasture of Allah Almighty is the things He has made unlawful."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Sabiq al-Jazari, whom I do not know; the remaining narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In Masjid al-Khayf, I came to see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and his Companions said to me: "O Wathilah! Move aside!" (that is, move away from in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him! For he has come to ask a question." The narrator states: I drew near and said: "O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, explain to us rulings that we may hold on to even after you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your own self should give you the ruling." The narrator says: I said: "How can that be?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave what seems doubtful to you for what does not seem doubtful to you, whatever rulings those who give rulings may give you." I asked: "How will I know that?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Place your hand on your heart, for the heart finds peace in the lawful and does not find peace in the unlawful; and the God-fearing Muslim leaves even a minor sin, fearing that he may fall into a major sin." I said: "May my father be ransomed for you, what is partisanship ('asabiyyah)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That a man helps his people in wrongdoing." I asked: "Who is the greedy one?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One who seeks earnings unlawfully." I asked: "Who is the God-fearing one?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One who stops at what is doubtful." I asked: "Who is the believer?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One from whom people are safe regarding their wealth and their lives." I asked: "Who is the Muslim?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One from whose tongue and hand the other Muslims are safe." I asked: "Which jihad is most excellent?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Speaking the right word before an unjust ruler."
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ubayd bin al-Qasim, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: "O Prophet of Allah! Tell me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, I will tell you about the thing you have come to ask about, and if you wish, you may ask." I said: "Rather, tell me, O Messenger of Allah! For that will be more reassuring for me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have come to ask about certainty and doubt." I said: "That is so." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Certainty is what settles firmly in the chest and with which the heart is at peace, whatever rulings those who give rulings may give you. Leave what puts you in doubt and go to what does not put you in doubt, for goodness is tranquillity and doubt is unease. When you are in doubt, leave it." After that the narrator mentioned the hadith as before.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Abdullah al-Kindi, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Wabisah bin Ma'bad al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), intending to ask him about every kind of righteousness and sin. When I came to him, he was among some people who were sitting around him. I began stepping over them to get close to him, and one of them rebuked me and said: "O Wabisah! Keep away from the Messenger of Allah!" I said: "I want to get close to him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave Wabisah alone! O Wabisah, come close to me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me to come near, until I was in front of him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you ask me, or shall I tell you?" I said: "No! Rather, you tell me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have come to ask about righteousness and sin." I said: "Yes!" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered his fingertips together and, tapping my chest with them, said: "Righteousness is that about which the soul is at peace and about which the heart is at peace; and sin is that which pricks in the soul and about which the soul wavers, whatever rulings people may give you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and Ahmad recorded it from that Companion in abridged form. The narrators of one of al-Tabarani's two chains are thiqat (trustworthy).

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is saddened by his bad deed and pleased by his good deed is a believer."
