It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, or by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), if you were to commit so many errors (sins) that your errors filled the space between the heavens and the earth, and then you sought forgiveness from Allah, He would certainly forgive you. And by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), or by the One in whose hand is my soul, if no sins were committed by you, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, would bring into being a people who would sin, then seek forgiveness (from Allah), and Allah would forgive them."
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la (may Allah have mercy on them both) recorded it, and all its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The expiation for sin is remorse."
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
"If you people did not sin, Allah Almighty would bring a people who would sin, and Allah Almighty would forgive them."
Ahmad recorded it, and at-Tabarani recorded it in abridged form with only these words:
"The expiation for sin is remorse."
At-Tabarani recorded this in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and al-Bazzar also recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Amr bin Malik al-Nukri, who is da'if (weak), though he has been declared trustworthy; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

With the same chain, from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), from Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him), this saying of his Lord is narrated:
"O My servant! As long as you keep calling upon Me and placing your hope in Me, and you do not associate anyone with Me as a partner, I will forgive you everything that is in you (that is, whatever sins you have committed)."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Before this, the hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) has passed, in which these words occur:
"O My servants! All of you were astray, except the one whom I guided."
It has passed in the Book of Supplications, in the chapter on the power of Allah Almighty and that the servant is in need of Allah Almighty in every matter.
