Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to say among ourselves that the most virtuous person among the people of Madinah was Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Yahya bin al-Sakan, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) and Salih Jazarah declared da'if (weak); the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

It is transmitted from him that he said: I recited seventy surahs before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I completed the whole Qur'an before the best of people, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This report is in the Sahih, but without the part about completing the whole Qur'an before Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who is the chief of the Arabs? The people submitted: You are, O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am the chief of the children of Adam, and Ali is the chief of the Arabs.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Khaqan bin Abdullah bin al-Ahtam, whom Abu Dawud declared da'if (weak).
