Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever hates Umar hates me, and whoever loves Umar loves me. Indeed, on the evening of Arafah, Allah Almighty expressed pride in all the people in general, and expressed pride in Umar in particular. Allah Almighty has not sent any prophet except that there was a muhaddath in that prophet's Ummah; if there were any such person in my Ummah, it would be Umar." The people said: O Messenger of Allah! What is a muhaddath like? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The angels speak upon his tongue.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Sa'd, the servant of al-Hasan al-Basri, whom I do not know. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him); he looked at him with a smile and said: "O Ibn al-Khattab! Why did I look at you with a smile?" He replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty expressed pride in the people of Arafah in general, and expressed pride in you in particular."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Rishdin bin Sa'd, and there is disagreement about using him as evidence.
