بَابٌ فِي عِلْمِهِ .

عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : لَوْ أَنَّ عِلْمَ عُمَرَ وُضِعَ فِي كِفَّةِ الْمِيزَانِ ، وَوُضِعَ عِلْمُ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ فِي كِفَّةٍ ; لَرَجَحَ عِلْمُهُ بِعِلْمِهِمْ . .
قَالَ وَكِيعٌ : قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ : فَأَنْكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ ، فَأَتَيْتُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : وَمَا أَنْكَرْتَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ؟ ! ! فَوَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ : إِنِّي لَأَحْسَبُ تِسْعَةَ أَعْشَارِ الْعِلْمِ ذَهَبَ يَوْمَ ذَهَبَ عُمَرُ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ بِأَسَانِيدَ ، وَرِجَالُ هَذَا رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ غَيْرُ أَسَدِ بْنِ مُوسَى ، وَهُوَ ثِقَةٌ .
قَالَ وَكِيعٌ : قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ : فَأَنْكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ ، فَأَتَيْتُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : وَمَا أَنْكَرْتَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ؟ ! ! فَوَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ : إِنِّي لَأَحْسَبُ تِسْعَةَ أَعْشَارِ الْعِلْمِ ذَهَبَ يَوْمَ ذَهَبَ عُمَرُ .

Abu Wa'il narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If the knowledge of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) were placed in one pan of the scale, and the knowledge of all the people of the earth in the other pan, the pan of Sayyiduna Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) knowledge would outweigh their knowledge. Waki' narrates: al-A'mash stated: I rejected this report, so I went to Ibrahim al-Nakha'i and mentioned it to him. He said: Why do you reject this? By Allah! Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said something of even greater merit than that. He said: I think that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) departed from this world, nine tenths of knowledge departed at that time.

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ فِي النَّوْمِ أَنِّي أُعْطِيتُ عُسًّا مَمْلُوءًا لَبَنًا ، فَشَرِبْتُ حَتَّى تَمَلَّأْتُ ، حَتَّى رَأَيْتُهُ يَجْرِي فِي عُرُوقِي بَيْنَ الْجِلْدِ وَاللَّحْمِ ، فَفَضَلَتْ فَضْلَةٌ فَأَعْطَيْتُهَا عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ " . فَأَوَّلُوهَا قَالُوا : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، هَذَا عِلْمٌ أَعْطَاكَهُ اللَّهُ فَمَلَأَكَ مِنْهُ ، فَفَضَلَتْ فَضْلَةٌ فَأَعْطَيْتَهَا عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ . فَقَالَ : " أَصَبْتُمْ " .
قُلْتُ : هُوَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ بِغَيْرِ سِيَاقِهِ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I saw in a dream that I was given a large bowl full of milk. I drank from it until I was fully satisfied, until I saw its effects flowing within the veins between my skin and flesh. The milk that was left over I gave to Umar bin al-Khattab." They interpreted it: the people said: O Prophet of Allah! This refers to the knowledge that Allah Almighty gave you, and you were filled with it and some of it remained, so you gave it to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have interpreted it correctly. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: this report is in the Sahih, though not in this wording.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) had the most knowledge of Allah Almighty among us, recited the Book of Allah Almighty the most, and had the deepest understanding of the religion of Allah.
