Reports on Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)

Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates: The name of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abdullah bin Uthman bin Amir bin Amr bin Ka'b bin Sa'd bin Taym bin Murrah bin Lu'ayy. He took part in the Battle of Badr with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The mother of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is Umm al-Khayr Salma bint Sakhr bin Amir bin Amr bin Ka'b bin Sa'd bin Taym bin Murrah bin Lu'ayy bin Ghalib bin Fihr bin Malik, and the mother of Umm al-Khayr is "Dilaf", whose name is Umaymah bint Ubayd bin al-Naqid al-Khuza'i. The grandmother of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), that is, the mother of Sayyiduna Abu Quhafah (may Allah be pleased with him), is Aminah bint Abd al-Uzza bin Hurthan bin Awf bin Ubayd bin Uwayj bin Adi bin Ka'b.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "This is one freed by Allah Almighty from Hell." (The narrator says:) So from that day he came to be called Atiq; before that his name was Abdullah bin Uthman.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded something similar, and the narrators of both are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: By Allah! One day I was in my house, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions were in the courtyard, with a curtain between me and them. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever would like to see someone freed from Hell should look at Abu Bakr. The name that his family gave him is Abdullah bin Uthman, but the name Atiq prevailed over it." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Part of this narration was recorded by al-Tirmidhi.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Salih bin Musa al-Talhi, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The mother of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), the mother of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), the mother of Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), the mother of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), the mother of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and the mother of Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) (all of these women) accepted Islam. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was named Atiq bin Uthman because his face was handsome.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Shabib, and he is da'if (weak).

Al-Layth bin Sa'd narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was named Atiq because of the beauty of his face; otherwise his name was Abdullah bin Uthman.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Al-Qasim bin Muhammad narrates: I asked Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the name of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and she replied: Abdullah. I said: But people say his name was Atiq? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Sayyiduna Abu Quhafah (may Allah be pleased with him) had three sons. He named one of them Atiq, one Mu'aytiq and one Mu'attaq.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Qays bin Abi Qays al-Bukhari; if he is thiqah (trustworthy), then the chain of this narration is hasan (good).

It is reported about Abu Hafs Amr bin Ali that he used to say: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had little flesh on his face, and he was named "Atiq" because of the beauty of his face; otherwise his name was Abdullah bin Uthman.
It has also been reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named him "Atiq", that is, one freed from Hell.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is jayyid (good) and hasan.

Hakim bin Sa'd narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) say on oath: "Allah Almighty sent down from the heaven the name of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): 'al-Siddiq'."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was taken up on the Mi'raj to the lowest heaven, and whichever heaven I passed by, I found my name there, 'Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah', and behind me (the name of) Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Ibrahim al-Ghifari, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When I was taken up on the Mi'raj to the heaven, whichever heaven I passed, I found my name written there: 'Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah', (and alongside it was written) 'Abu Bakr al-Siddiq'."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Ibrahim al-Ghifari, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken on the Mi'raj, he said: My people will not believe me. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) submitted to him: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) will believe you, and he is al-Siddiq.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat.

In one narration recorded by him, the wording is: "My people will accuse me." In one of its two chains is a narrator, Abu Wahb, who narrated it from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and I do not know him. The remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: On the night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken on the Mi'raj, he said: I will go out to Quraysh and tell them about it. (When he told the people about it,) the people declared him a liar, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) affirmed him, so on that day he was named al-Siddiq.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-A'la bin Abi al-Musawir, and he is matruk (abandoned).
