Shaqiq, or someone else, narrates (this doubt is from the narrator Qays): A man came to Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called for whatever he had in his house for him and said: "Had the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not forbidden us" (the narrator is in doubt, or perhaps the words are: "Had we not been forbidden") "that any of us should go to trouble for his companion, I would have gone to trouble for you."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with various chains; the narrators of one of the chains of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are the narrators of the Sahih.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded a similar report from Abu Wa'il, and he did not express doubt in it.
Shaqiq bin Salamah narrates: I and a companion of mine went to Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Were it not that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade going to trouble, I would have gone to trouble for you." Then he brought bread and salt. My companion said: "If only there were thyme (sa'tar) in our salt, it would be fitting." So Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) sent his vessel for purification, had it pawned, and with it brought thyme. When we had eaten, my companion said: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has made us content with what He has provided us." Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Had you been content with what He provided you, my vessel for purification would not have been pawned."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Muhammad bin Mansur al-Tusi, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
In a narration recorded by him, the words are: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from going to trouble for a guest over something we do not have."
