Abdullah bin Ubayd bin Umayr narrates: Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us along with some of the Companions. He placed bread and vinegar before them, and Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Eat, for I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'What an excellent condiment vinegar is! It is ruin for a man that some of his brothers come to him and he considers what is in his house too lowly to offer them, and it is ruin for those people that they consider lowly what is offered to them.'" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This report is in the Sahih in abridged form.
Imam Ahmad, Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it, except that he (Abu Ya'la) has these words: "It is enough evil for a man that he considers lowly what is presented to him." The chain of Imam Abu Ya'la contains a narrator, Abu Talib the storyteller, and I do not know him; the rest of Abu Ya'la's narrators have been declared trustworthy.
Abu Awanah narrates: I prepared food and invited Sulayman al-A'mash. It reached me that he said: "Waddah has invited us to a bare bone (one without meat) and a sour pomegranate." The narrator says: I met Raqabah bin Masqalah and complained to him about this. He said: "I will take care of it for you." Then he met Sulayman al-A'mash and said: "O Abu Muhammad, one of our brothers invited you and honoured you, and you said that the invitation was to a bare bone and a sour pomegranate! By Allah, all I know of you is that you are ill-natured, always scowling, quick to become bored, and you belittle the right of visitors; it is as if mustard is being put into your nose whenever you are asked about wisdom."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).
