Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satirize (the polytheists) with poetry! Indeed, the believer strives (performs jihad) with his wealth and his life. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, it is as if you are shooting arrows at them."

Hadith Takhrij «
In one narration it is reported from Sayyiduna Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Allah Almighty has revealed concerning poetry what He was to reveal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the believer strives (performs jihad) with his life and his tongue." Then the narrator mentioned the hadith as before. Imam Ahmad recorded all these narrations with various chains, the narrators of one of which are the narrators of the Sahih. Al-Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat.

Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the polytheists satirized us, we complained about it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say about them just as they say about you." The narrator says: I remember us teaching it (the satirical poetry against the polytheists) to the slave-girls of Madinah.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, al-Bazzar recorded something similar, and al-Tabarani recorded it, and their narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). Al-Tabarani added these words in it: Once a man was reciting satirical verses about Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was listening to him. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Keep at the two old men!" A man said to him: "Subhan Allah! Is he saying this? Is he saying this, while you are the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Sit down and listen, or go away!" Then Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When the polytheists satirized us." Then the narrator mentioned the hadith as before, through various routes, the narrators of one of which are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by him while he was reciting these verses: "Lo! Has news of us reached Ghassan (the tribe), while between us and them lies a vast wilderness whose paths are sought out? Do you wish to contend with us over our sanctities? Every band is as if someone rides behind it, with the tops of its helmets gleaming." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! O Ka'b bin Malik! So Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said (that is, he changed one half-verse and recited it thus): "Do you wish to contend with us over our religion?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! O Ka'b!
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I was passing through the mosque, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated among his Companions. Meanwhile, someone among those present said: O Abdullah bin Rawahah! It seemed to me as though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had called me, so I came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sit down, Abdullah bin Rawahah. When you set out to compose poetry, how do you compose it? I submitted: First I reflect, then I compose. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are to compose poetry against the polytheists. The narrator says: I had made no preparation for this, so I recited these verses: "O you who are worth the price of a cloak (that is, O cheap people)! Before, you were people who went on foot, or Mudar brought you near (or made you lowly)." I sensed displeasure on the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because I had called his people "worth the price of a cloak (that is, cheap people)". I reflected again and then said: "O Hashim of goodness! Allah Almighty has granted you a superiority over all creation, a superiority that will not change. I have come to know the goodness in you, which I came to know through insight; concerning what those people see (or understand), I hold an opinion contrary to theirs. If you were to ask (for help) from any one of them, or seek their support, in some important affair of yours, they would neither give shelter nor help. So may Allah Almighty keep you firm upon the goodness He has granted you, just as He kept Sayyiduna Musa firm, and may He help you as those people were helped." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ibn Rawahah! May Allah Almighty keep you firm.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the narrator Mudrik bin Umarah did not meet Sayyiduna Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him).
