Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I was passing through the mosque, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated among his Companions. Meanwhile, someone among those present said: O Abdullah bin Rawahah! It seemed to me as though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had called me, so I came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sit down, Abdullah bin Rawahah. When you set out to compose poetry, how do you compose it? I submitted: First I reflect, then I compose. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are to compose poetry against the polytheists. The narrator says: I had made no preparation for this, so I recited these verses: "O you who are worth the price of a cloak (that is, O cheap people)! Before, you were people who went on foot, or Mudar brought you near (or made you lowly)." I sensed displeasure on the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because I had called his people "worth the price of a cloak (that is, cheap people)". I reflected again and then said: "O Hashim of goodness! Allah Almighty has granted you a superiority over all creation, a superiority that will not change. I have come to know the goodness in you, which I came to know through insight; concerning what those people see (or understand), I hold an opinion contrary to theirs. If you were to ask (for help) from any one of them, or seek their support, in some important affair of yours, they would neither give shelter nor help. So may Allah Almighty keep you firm upon the goodness He has granted you, just as He kept Sayyiduna Musa firm, and may He help you as those people were helped." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ibn Rawahah! May Allah Almighty keep you firm.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the narrator Mudrik bin Umarah did not meet Sayyiduna Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him).
