Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by him while he was reciting these verses: "Lo! Has news of us reached Ghassan (the tribe), while between us and them lies a vast wilderness whose paths are sought out? Do you wish to contend with us over our sanctities? Every band is as if someone rides behind it, with the tops of its helmets gleaming." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! O Ka'b bin Malik! So Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said (that is, he changed one half-verse and recited it thus): "Do you wish to contend with us over our religion?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! O Ka'b!
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).
