Ali bin Zayd narrates: I was with al-Hajjaj in the palace while he was punishing people on account of Ibn al-Ash'ath. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came and drew near. Al-Hajjaj said to him: "Come forward, O wicked one! O you who roam about in tribulations — sometimes with Ali bin Abi Talib, sometimes with Ibn al-Zubayr, sometimes with Ibn al-Ash'ath! By the One in whose hand is my soul, I will uproot you as a boil is uprooted, and I will tear you apart as a lizard is torn apart." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "May Allah Almighty keep the Amir well! Whom does he mean?" Al-Hajjaj said: "I mean you! May Allah Almighty make your hearing deaf!" So he recited: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return), and then got up and left him. Later he said: "Had it not been for the thought of my children and my fear for them, I would have stood in that place and spoken such words that he would never have been able to answer me after them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its narrator Ali bin Zayd is da'if (weak), though he has been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I heard al-Hajjaj delivering a sermon, and he said something which I considered objectionable. At first I intended to stop him, then I remembered this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "It is not proper for a believer to humiliate himself." The narrator says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! How would he humiliate himself?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That he exposes himself to a trial he cannot bear."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and, in abridged form, in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The chain of al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir is jayyid (good), and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Zakariyya bin Yahya bin Ayyub al-Darir; al-Khatib mentioned him: he narrated from a group and a group narrated from him, and no one has criticised him.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not proper for a Muslim to humiliate himself." The people asked: "How would he humiliate himself?" He said: "That he exposes himself to a trial he cannot bear."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat by way of al-Khadir from al-Jarud; their lineage is not given and I do not know them, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
