The saying of Allah the Exalted: "A mosque founded on righteousness"

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), two men differed about the mosque whose foundation was laid on piety (and which is mentioned in the Qur'an). One of the two said that it meant the Prophet's Mosque, and the other said that it meant the Mosque of Quba. Both of them came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means this mosque of mine."

In one narration the wording is: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the mosque whose foundation was laid on piety, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means this mosque of mine." Imam Ahmad recorded all these narrations, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded them in abridged form. The narrators of both narrations are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the mosque whose foundation was laid on piety, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means this mosque of mine."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it both as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) and as mawquf (stopping at the Companion). The chain of the marfu' narration contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Amir al-Aslami, and he is da'if (weak). In one of the chains of the mawquf narrations, the narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, and in the other route these words are additional: Urwah bin al-Zubayr says: "The mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is better than the Mosque of Quba, but this verse was revealed about the Mosque of Quba."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Urwah (perhaps) said this because he had not come to know of the marfu' hadith; and Allah knows best.
