Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, (Allah Almighty says:) "And among the Bedouins around you are some hypocrites, and among the people of Madinah too are some hypocrites who are steeped in hypocrisy. You do not know them; We know them. We will soon punish them twice, and then they will be returned to a great punishment." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up on a Friday to deliver the sermon and said: "O so-and-so, get up and go out, for you are a hypocrite. O so-and-so, you too go out, for you too are a hypocrite." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called them out by their names, put them out of the mosque and disgraced them. That day Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had not been able to come early for the Friday prayer because of some errand. As these people came out of the mosque, they met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to hide from them, ashamed that he had not come to the Friday prayer earlier; he thought that perhaps the people had prayed and were going back. And these people began to hide from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), thinking that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had come to know about their affair. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque, and the people had not yet prayed. A man said to him: "O Umar, glad tidings to you! Today Allah Almighty has disgraced the hypocrites." (The narrator says:) This is the first punishment, and the second punishment will be in the form of the punishment of the grave.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Husayn bin Amr bin Muhammad al-Anqazi, and he is da'if (weak).
