Sayyiduna Abu Rayhanah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a battle. One day we reached a hillock and spent the night on it. We were struck by severe cold, so much so that I saw a man dig a pit in the ground, get into it and put his shield over himself. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the people's condition, he called out: "Who will guard us tonight? I will make a supplication to Allah Almighty for him in which there will be excellence for him." A man from the Ansar said: O Messenger of Allah, I will. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come closer." He came closer, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who are you?" The Ansari told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) his name. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made supplication for him and supplicated abundantly. Sayyiduna Abu Rayhanah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When I heard the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I said: I will be another one. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come closer." I came closer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who are you?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, Abu Rayhanah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made supplication for me, but it was less than what he had made for the Ansari. Then he said: "Hell is forbidden to an eye that sheds tears (or he said: that weeps) out of fear of Allah, and Hell is forbidden to an eye that stays awake through the night in the path of Allah." (Or he said:) "Hell is also forbidden to a third eye," but the narrator Muhammad bin Sumayr did not hear (the mention of) it. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded part of it. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; the narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and related that a man had died. He asked: "Has any one of you seen him doing any good deed?" A man said: Yes. I stood guard with him one night in the path of Allah. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions stood up, and he offered the funeral prayer for him. When the man had been lowered into the grave, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) scattered earth on his grave with his own blessed hand and then said: "Your companions thought that you were among the people of Hell, and I bear witness that you are among the people of Paradise." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do not ask about people's deeds; rather, ask about the fitrah (natural disposition)."
