Sayyiduna Abu Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and related that a man had died. He asked: "Has any one of you seen him doing any good deed?" A man said: Yes. I stood guard with him one night in the path of Allah. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions stood up, and he offered the funeral prayer for him. When the man had been lowered into the grave, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) scattered earth on his grave with his own blessed hand and then said: "Your companions thought that you were among the people of Hell, and I bear witness that you are among the people of Paradise." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do not ask about people's deeds; rather, ask about the fitrah (natural disposition)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Irq al-Himsi, whom al-Dhahabi declared da'if (weak).
