It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he was with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man and his wife came to him. The man said: "I divorced my wife, then I took her back." The woman said: "If you permit me, I will tell you the actual situation." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Tell it." The woman said: "This man divorced me, then he left me as I was until the last part of three menstrual periods came and my (third period's) bleeding stopped. I put out the water for my ritual bath (ghusl), shut my door and took off my clothes; then he knocked at the door and said: 'I have taken you back, I have taken you back.' So I left my bath and put on my clothes." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O son of Umm Abd! What do you say about her?" I said: "I think that this man has more right to this woman before prayer becomes lawful for the woman." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Your opinion is good; I think the same."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abu Ubaydah bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to my father asking him about this, and my father said: "How are you giving a fatwa to a hypocrite?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We seek refuge for you with Allah from your being a hypocrite, and we also seek refuge with Allah from such a situation arising in Islam and then you pass away without having explained it." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I think that the man has a right to the woman until she performs the ritual bath (ghusl) after the third menstrual period and prayer becomes lawful for her." The narrator says: To my knowledge, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) adopted this view.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Zayd bin Rafi', who is da'if (weak). Abu Ubaydah did not hear from his father (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: My grandfather gave his wife a thousand divorces. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does your grandfather not fear Allah Almighty? As for three divorces, he had the right to them (or: three divorces have taken effect from him); and as for nine hundred and ninety-seven divorces, they are transgression and wrongdoing. If Allah Almighty wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him."

In one narration, also from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), these words are reported. He narrates: One of my forefathers gave his wife a thousand divorces. His sons came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Our father has given our mother a thousand divorces; is there any way out?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your father did not fear Allah Almighty, otherwise Allah Almighty would have made a way out for him. On the basis of three divorces that woman has become separated from this man, and this is against the Sunnah; and nine hundred and ninety-seven divorces are a sin upon this man's neck." Al-Tabarani recorded all of these narrations. Its chain contains a narrator, Ubaydullah bin al-Walid al-Wassafi al-Ijli, who is da'if (weak).
