In al-Mu'jam al-Kabir it is reported from this Companion: "We give you (that is, the Arabs) precedence because of the excellence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) meant the Arabs. (He said:) "We will not marry your women." The narrators of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are thiqat (trustworthy), and the chain of al-Mu'jam al-Awsat contains al-Sari bin Isma'il, who is matruk (abandoned).

Thabit al-Bunani narrates: Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) went with Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) to propose on his behalf to a woman of Banu Layth. He entered the host's house and mentioned the virtues of Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), his precedence and his Islam, and said that he wished to marry such-and-such a young woman of theirs. They said: As for Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), we will not marry her to him, but we will marry her to you. So Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) married her. Then he came out and said: Something has happened that I am ashamed to mention. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why is that? Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) told him the whole matter, and Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have more right to be ashamed before you, that I proposed to her when Allah Almighty had already decreed her for you.
At-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that Thabit did not hear from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) or from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him).
