عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ ( وَلَا تَنْكِحُوا الْمُشْرِكَاتِ حَتَّى يُؤْمِنَّ ) . فَحُجِزَ النَّاسُ عَنْهُنَّ حَتَّى نَزَلَتِ الْآيَةُ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا : ( الْيَوْمَ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ ) ، ( وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ ) . فَنَكَحَ النَّاسُ نِسَاءَ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: This verse was revealed: "Do not marry polytheist women until they believe," so people held back from them, until the verse after it was revealed: "This day all good things have been made lawful for you," "and chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Book before you." So people married women of the People of the Book.
